More Lunch Con’t

11 Feb

By Thursday, I’m completely over eating out.  Definitely over a cold sandwich.  Mezza Mediterranean Grill is one of the best places to eat lunch in the loop because it offers something a little different – warm, Mediterranean dishes or satisfying salads that are quick and fresh and on the healthy side (depending on what you order).

Mezza’s menu is broken down into kabobs, pitas and wraps, salads, soups and sides.  The kabobs (chicken, beef, shrimp or veggie) are served warm on a skewer with white or brown rice and your choice of any side (falafel, tabouleh, hummus, etc. – their hummus is rich and creamy – yum).  There are way too many pitas and wraps to list but, so you get an idea, you can choose from a falafel pita, lamb and beef schwarma pita, chicken caesar wrap or roasted vegetable wrap.  In other words, there’s something for everyone.  The pita bread itself is thick and soft.  I love it. The wraps (white or whole wheat) are good, too (thinner than the pitas and a little stiff – they don’t fold as well).  Most pitas and wraps come with a white tahini sauce that looks kind of scary but is actually mild and delicious. The salads at Mezza are great.  Lots of fresh or roasted vegetable options and you can add steak, chicken or shrimp to any of them.  Mezza chicken is not offensive at all, which is another bonus.  I love the Shepherd’s Salad with goat cheese, tomato, avocado, dates, corn and toasted almonds in a honey lime vinaigrette.  The Mezzaterranean Salad – basically a traditional Greek salad – is good, too.  If you add chicken (regular or spicy) and a side of vegan lentil soup or hummus, your Thursday lunch aversion goes away a little.

One downside of Mezza is that, as you are being corralled through the ordering  line, you can sometimes end up in the middle of a little domestic dispute between the owner (?) manager (?) – I don’t know who he is – and his line cooks.  They’re passionate about what they do, I guess.
