Holiday Spirit

19 Dec

This is the sweetest, interactive holiday gift.   My sister-in-law gave me the idea at Thanksgiving.  I have modified the recipe a bit.

Place two slices of orange (cut in to fourths), a sprig of rosemary, two cinnamon sticks, a small handful of cloves, and two bay leaves in a mason jar.

Gift to others, with the instruction that they simmer the ingredients in two or so cups of water (refilling as necessary as water evaporates).  The oranges with the cloves, cinnamon, and other herbs make your home smell like the holidays – perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.

(One batch lasts for several days – don’t forget to turn off your stove when you are not simmering the ingredients, and regularly add water so you are not burning the bottom of your pot!)

Here’s a bit of irony. I liked this idea so much, I put a jar together for Maurika, since we were going to her house for Christmas. Little did I know that she was the sister-in-law who gave you the idea. She was very complimentary of the presentation in the mason jar and thought the combination of ingredients (especially the rosemary sprig) was attractive.
