All Play & No Work

25 Jul

Up until this point (365 days of posting, plus the bonus posts since then), I have kept this just-for-fun blog and my working life fairly separate.  But, I recently launched a new project that I think you will enjoy, and I am so excited about it, anyway that I wanted to share it with you!

After years of working as a litigator in a large corporate law firm, I left the firm to launch my own business where I worked closely with law students and new lawyers to help them with practical skills they do not learn in law school but that are central to a successful legal career.

This week, I have launched a spin-off program for entrepreneurs and small business owners focused on presentation, presence, and communication skills.  Through Greenhorn Bold, my mission is to help entrepreneurs use their unique presence and voice to influence and inspire others and ultimately to be bold and brilliant in their businesses and in their lives.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Sincerely,

Desiree

Steve Jobs

6 Oct

I had promised a different post this evening but wanted to remark on the passing of the phenomenal Steve Jobs.  Here, his brilliant commencement speech, which I have kept bookmarked for inspiration since I first heard it a couple of years ago.

I was thinking about Apple this morning.  The small ways it impacted even my life (above and beyond the wild benefits of owning the requisite iPod, iPad, and iPhone – I am never lost, I am never without music, I am never bored, we had our own personal tour guide in Paris – my god).In elementary school, we played Oregon Trail in a room full of boxy Macintosh computers.

In the early days, Brian got an iPod for Christmas (2001, I think).  We were fascinated.

Years later, in law school, I remember John telling me that the iPod changed his life.  He did not say it cavalierly, but genuinely.

My dear friend recently moved to California to work at Apple.  What an opportunity.

And this speech – I read it again and again (as if it was for me) when I left my law firm to launch my business.  It was crafted for that purpose, I believe.  To inspire globally and personally, at once.

“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do,” he said.

Happy Labor Day!

5 Sep

The first ever Labor Day was celebrated in 1882 by the Central Labor Union in New York.  It became a national federal holiday in 1894 when President Grover Cleveland reconciled with the labor movement.  Thanks Wiki!

Somebody That I Used To Know

17 Jul

Abe found this on Sullivan.  It is, as Sullivan’s guest blogger says, a little low-key, but it’s nice for a Sunday.  (It is addictive, too – the song will stay with you for an hour or two, at a minimum.)
